WARWICK, RI – A Rhode Island State Police Officer was hospitalized after an alleged drunk driver collided with his police cruiser on I-95 in Warwick Tuesday, WPRI reports.
Police say the crash happened before 2 a.m. on Tuesday near exit 14 on I-95. The police cruiser was parked with other police vehicles to form a blockade at a crash scene on the highway. A vehicle crashed into the rear of one of the parked cruisers.
A state trooper was sitting inside the cruiser when it was hit. He was hospitalized with back and neck injuries and a concussion.
Authorities identified the man who caused the crash as 36-year-old Christopher Warrener. They say Warrener registered a blood alcohol level that was almost three times the legal limit.
Warrener was not hurt in the crash. Police have charged him with driving under the influence and driving to endanger resulting in physical injury.
